Civil War Educational Resources

Extend your experience beyond the exhibit with our educator resources, designed to meet specific Michigan Education Standards.  These online activities can be used directly in your classroom to enhance your students' understanding of the Civil War: 

Propaganda Creation
This activity will prepare students for encountering political satire or propaganda by having them analyze a Civil War envelope and a modern political cartoon in order to understand their meaning and function.

Propaganda Report
This activity will help students understand propaganda and its function by having them analyze a Civil War envelope and report its meaning, who may have sent it, and the effect it may have had on the recipient.

Civil War Slang
In this activity students will learn slang terms from the Civil War and then compose their own letter as a soldier writing home or as a person writing to a soldier.
