The Public Museum is offering a variety of events during winter and spring of 2008 to enhance your Scouting program. Special Museum activities will be presented and knowledgeable instructors will be on hand to help your Scouts earn their pins, belt loops and badges. (Some Boy Scout programs include a registered merit badge counselor.)

 

Paid advance registration for all programs is required as space is limited, so call early. The event fee includes Museum admission, supplies, and special exhibit surcharges. Parking is available in the Museum ramp for a fee. Cancellation policies apply (please check registration form for details).

Monday, January 21, 2008

Academics: Astronomy

6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

$7.00 per Scout

Registered leaders are free; one extra adult for every five Scouts is free

Additional adults are $8.00 each

Event capacity: 125 Scouts

 

Scouts will have an out-of-this-world experience at the Public Museum while learning about the wonders of the sky overhead. They will explore planets, constellations, and more in the unique educational environment of the Roger B, Chaffee Planetarium, and participate in a series of fun, astronomy-related activities. Real astronomers will be on hand to answer questions and to demonstrate how real telescopes work.

At the close of this event Cub Scouts will have completed Academic Belt Loop requirements 1, 2, and 3; Academic Pin requirements 4, 5, 6, 7, and 12; and Bear electives 1a and c.

Academics: Music

6:00pm to 8:00pm

$7.00 per Scout

Registered Scout Leaders are free; one extra adult for every five scouts is free.

Additional adults are $8.00 each

Event capacity: 75 Scouts

 

This event includes a live musical performance in the Public Museum’s Meijer Theater, international songs to learn and making a musical instrument from recycled materials

At the close of this event Cub Scouts will have completed Belt Loop requirements 1, 2 & 3; Academics 1, 6 7, 9

Academics: Map and Compass

5:30pm to 8:00pm

$7.00 per scout

Registered leaders free, one extra adult for every five Scouts is free

Additional adults are $11.00

Event capacity: 200 Scouts

 

Special evening hours are being provided for Scouts to tour the temporary exhibition MAPS: Tools for Adventure. National Geographic and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum have teamed up to put together a highly interactive exhibition that introduces the visitor to the world of maps and exploration. There are five major sections: Explorers Mapping School, Explorations on Land, Explorations in Air & Space, Explorations at Sea, and NGS Explorers Headquarters.

At the close of this event Cub Scouts will have completed Academic Belt Loop requirements 1 and 2, Academic Pin requirements 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9.

 

Saturday April 26, 2008

Language and Culture

9:30am to 11:30am

$7.00 per scout

Registered leaders free, one extra adult for every five Scouts is free

Additional adults are $8.00

Event capacity: 75 Scouts

This event includes a tour through the recently opened permanent exhibit “Newcomers: The People of This Place”, which presents to the visitor the rich cultural heritage of West Michigan.

At the close of this event Cub Scouts will have completed Academic Belt Loop requirements 1, 2 and 3, and Academic Pin requirements 2, 6, 7, 10, and 12. Scouts are encouraged to bring with them a list of things around their home that were made in other counties, specifying the countries.

Saturdays, February 9 Part I and March 8 Part II (two day workshop)

Astronomy Parts I and II

9:30am to 12:00pm

$12.00 fee total for both dates

Registered leaders are free; one extra adult for every five Scouts is free

Additional adults are $8.00 each per session

Event capacity: 100 Scouts

 

Scouts will have an out-of-this world experience at the Public Museum while learning about the wonders of the sky overhead. They will explore planets, constellations, and more in the unique educational environment of the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium. Scouts will participate in a series of fun, astronomy-related activities. Real astronomers will be on hand to answer questions and to demonstrate how telescopes work.

Due to the large amount of content covered, this program is divided into two sections. Merit badge requirements covered at both sessions are 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d, 5a, 7c, 7d, 8a, 8b, 9a, and 10. Scouts should be able to complete most of their merit badge at these workshops, although a few requirements take several weeks of independent sky-watching to complete. Scouts will receive appropriate hand-outs at Part I. A merit badge counselor will be available to sign-off after completion of independent study and Part II.

Engineering

11:00am to 1pm or 12:00pm to 2pm (staggered start times, program 2 hours)

$7.00 fee

Registered leaders are free; one extra adult for every five Scouts is free

Additional adults are $8.00 each

Event capacity: 100 Scouts

 

Have your scouts explore various applications of math, architecture, problem solving, drawing, estimation, mechanics and other concepts through fun hands-on engineering activities including: robotics and electronics; bridge design concepts; tunnel and dam building; and water and waste water treatment concepts. This program is offered through a partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers.

Engineering merit badge requirements covered in part or completely at this workshop include 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8.

Music

6:00pm to 8:00pm

$7.00 per Boy Scout

Registered Scout Leaders are free; one extra adult for every five scouts is free.

Additional adults are $8.00 each

Event capacity: 75 Scouts

 

This event includes a live musical performance in the Public Museum’s Meijer Theater, international songs to learn and teach, a lesson on how musical instruments make sound, and an opportunity to play musical instruments from around the world.

At the close of this event Boy Scouts will have completed Merit Badge requirements 1, 2, 3a, and 4a. With a bit of preparation prior to the event, Scouts should be able to finish their entire merit badge at this workshop (details will be included in the registration confirmation letter.) A merit badge counselor will be available.
